What determines the price of private number plates?

October 31, 2009
Posted in Number Plates — Written by Sue C

If you’ve been looking into buying yourself a private number plate, you may have noticed that there can be huge differences in prices- with the cost of many plates breaking into 6 figures. However, many people don’t understand why the prices of plates vary so much.
There are now well over 30 million private number plates on the market, with prices varying from just a couple of hundred pounds to over lb100k.
The prices of number plates are most commonly determined by experienced dealers, and several factors are taken into consideration during this process.

The novelty value and age of a number plate are the two main factors that have an impact on price. The amount of numbers on a registration can also have a major impact- the fewer numbers there are the higher the value.

As so many people look for number plates that bear their initials, the more demand there is for certain letter combinations generally means that the value of the plate will be a lot higher.
The prices of private number plates seem to be continually on the rise, so they’re also a fantastic investment as well as the perfect way of personalising your car.

You’ve chosen your personalised number plates- what’s next?

Once you’ve decided to purchase personalised number plates, the task of sourcing one that you like can be a difficult one that can take weeks, if not months if you’re particularly fussy! However, once you’ve found one, the process doesn’t end there.
Once you’ve bought your plate you need to ensure that you go through the correct registration procedure.
All the documents which you need to complete can be found on the DVLA’s website, or through popping in to your local DVLA office, and it’s a pretty simple process.
The form which you are most likely to need is the V317 form, which is for the transfer of registrations between vehicles. You can then send the completed form back to the DVLA, along with a valid MOT certificate, V5 / V5C certificates for both vehicles, and photocopies of the tax discs. If you don’t wish to risk posting these items then you can drop them in to your local DVLA office.
Once all this has been processed and confirmed by the DVLA then you’re ready to go!
Make sure that you get your new number plates printed on a quality plastic, and with the correct spacing, as any mis-spacing or character altering could prove to be illegal.

Private plates can make the perfect gift
Buying a present for a special occasion- such as an 18th or 21st birthday, or anniversary can be extremely difficult- especially for those people who seem to have everything!
Private plates are the perfect gift for motorists of all ages, and there are such a good selection of plates available that you’re sure to find something that’s suitable. Private plates are an especially good gift for young adults and new drivers- who may have an older model of car that’s in need of a pick me up.
Once you’ve decided to buy a private number plate as a gift, you then have the task of sourcing one. A good place to start looking is online, as there are endless plates available, and new plates are added on a regular basis. Looking online can also give you an idea of what costs you’re likely to face, so you will be able to gauge your budget accordingly. The internet is also useful for finding out where the latest auctions are.
Private plates are such as special gift as they can be transferred from vehicle to vehicle, so essentially they can last a lifetime.

Private number plates are a great way of personalising your car and making it look completely unique. Although private number plates may look expensive, they don’t have to make a massive dent in your wallet.
There are endless combinations of number plates available- so you can choose one that reflects your name, interests or even your job!
Once you have made the decision to buy a private number plate, it’s a good idea to set yourself a budget and stick to it, as it is all too easy to get carried away!
There are many affordable ways of buying number plates, the most popular being at auctions, from friends and online.
The DVLA hold around 6 auctions around the UK each year and make for a fantastic day out and the atmosphere can be electric. However, it is extremely easy to get carried away at an auction so it’s a good idea to take a friend or relative along with you to prevent you from making any rash and expensive decisions!
There are many ways of buying private number plates online- from online auction sites and specialist dealers. Buying a number plate online is probably the most popular option, as you can choose and buy at your own pace.
It’s worth asking around friends and family whether they know of anyone who is selling a private number plate, as you are more likely to bag yourself a bargain. The only problem with this is that you would have to be extremely lucky to find someone with a plate that suits you.
Private number plates are the perfect way to give your car a facelift.

In case you were wondering, the office still has the same beautiful panoramic view of the largest petrochemical complex in Europe. With the long and dark nights drawing in, this becomes all the more breathtaking with its distinct orange glow and twinkling lights from the gantries and staircases of the petrochemical works. Don’t believe me? Check out the photos from Flickr in this photostream.

From the inside, the new office is a spacious and comfortable place for Nationla Numbers dedicated team to buy and sell number plates. Give your old car a new lease of life with personalised number plates

Although many people are opting to buy new cars by taking advantage of the government scrappage scheme, this is simply not an affordable option for many people, who are having to make the most of their older vehicles.
However, just because you have an older vehicle doesn’t mean you can’t make it look its absolute best.
Personalised number plates are a fantastic way to update the look of your car, and can also make it more profitable when you finally decide to sell or trade it in.
You don’t just have to get a personalised number plate featuring your name or initials, you could also get something that refers to your personal interests.
Personalised number plates can make you stand out from the crowd- they’re always guaranteed to turn heads.
Getting a personalised number plate can also help to disguise the age of your car- again this is especially good if you’re car is clocking up the miles and you want to make it look a bit more modern!
Personalised number plates can be picked up for just a couple of hundred pounds (including all extra costs such as registering the plate with the DVLA), so they are a fun and much cheaper alternative to buying a new car.

World’s Most Expensive Numberplate

A Bugatti Veyron is now the proud owner of the world’s most expensive number plate. The number plate, which reads ‘F1’, would be perfect for the newly crowned F1 champion Jenson Button- although he recently sold his own Veyron, so maybe he’s looking for something a little faster these days!
The ‘F1’ number plate was sold by Essex County Council just over a year and a half ago- for the eye-watering price of lb440,625. Essex County Council had owned the plate since 1904- when the Bugatti Veyron was just a very, very distant twinkle in the sky!
The car is capable of doing 0-62 mph in less than three seconds and has a top speed of 253mph.
Added to an already very expensive car, one can only begin to image how much this winning combination would fetch if it was ever offered up for sale. However, unless you have the bank balance of Jenson Button you’ll be saving your pennies for a very long time!
The Veyron, complete with its pricey number plate, will be on display at the MPH Show at London’s Earls Court from 5th- 8th November.

Seven X’s on a number plate

October 23, 2009

Personalised number plates aren’t just popular in the UK; they are popular in the USA too. And, one story that gave us a laugh recently involved a man from Huntsville.

Scottie Robertson who is a former custom car builder owns the personalised registration plate ‘XXXXXXX’. Yep you read that right – seven Xs. This is a great personalised plate and you can bet that Mr Robertson is really proud of this private plate. That was until he started receiving parking fines from the Alabama authorities which totalled up to over lb11,000. And, Mr Robertson has only visited Alabama once which was over five years ago.

So what went wrong? Parking officials have told Mr Robertson that when any ticket is issued in Alabama and the number plate is not known, officials use seven Xs on the form instead. This means that Mr Robertson has been receiving fines meant for somebody else! Gregory Dawkins who is an Alabama traffic engineer commented on the unfortunate situation and suggested the city should now use nine Xs or leave the area completely blank.

This should come as some relief to Mr Robertson who at one point was receiving ten tickets per day.
