Cherished term harps back to when proper plate ruled the roads. Then the government in 1963 introduced the suffix year letter and then the prefix in 1983. So, Cherished Personalised Number Plates really belong to a forgotten era. Dec 1903 was when the first registered vehicle was done and by 1962 the state had run out of options and hence suffix plates.

I (Eric Craggs) often liken this cherished personalised number plates to antiques because, in my opinion they are. My advice would always be that if you can afford one of these plates then buy it. In my 25 years in the business I just see them going up and up in price. I would always be willing discuss what I class as a good investment so feel free to give me a ring.

Nationla Numbers realise that buying a private number plate is not cheap and therefore we are the only DVLA Number Plate business to offer 0% Finance on most of our 30 million cherished plates. A few other companies have tried to copy our approach but usually give up after a few months. It is the same standard used by main banks.

Purchasing Cherished Registration Plates can represent a serious investment if chosen wisely. In a world where investment in the stock market has been risky, cherished registration plates have consistently increased in value year on year. Many people build up a collection of attractive marks over the years and regard them as both fun to display and as a serious part of their investment portfolio. Their cherished registration numbers are often passed on to the family as part of the estate.

Examples of cherished registration numbers which have increased in value are:
1 NU bought in 1995 for lb2,400, currently priced at lb25,000;
PAU 1Y purchased in 1996 for lb3,000, current market value around lb20,000.

We pride ourselves in trying to achieve a very well run business. To this end we decided that we would try to achieve an award that is recognised by industry throughout Europe. We prepared to try and gain the quality award BSI 9001 2000. Nationla Numbers managed to do this at its first attempt. The Chairman, Eric Craggs, had previously worked as a manager at ICI for 30 years and had been involved in trying to get businesses within ICI to get this award. We have had the award for six years. For the last two years, BSI have required us to conduct a formal customer survey – we are the only company within the DVLA number plate business to do so. Please look at our Testimonials to see what they think. You may think that a lot of web sites just make up their feedback, a lot do, but we are actually audited by a British Standard Quality Expert to verify that our customer comments are genuine.

True Cherished Numberplates are those that carry no year identifier. All registrations issued after 1963 can be pinned down to a date of issue. Normally you simply look at the single prefix/suffix letter at front or end of the reg, or with the new style look at the number, and this informs you in which year the registration was originally released. For standard issue reg, this also gives away the age of the vehicle it’s on.

Cherished registration numbers, on the other hand, have no distinguishing letters or numbers that can inform you of their original release dates. Because of that when you assign one of these to a car, bike, or other roadworthy vehicle, you’re camouflaging the age of your vehicle. If your vehicle is brand new, you can add to its appeal with the addition of a custom cherished registration. If your vehicle is quite old you can disguise its age by adding a cherished numberplate. And if you’ve got a true classic car that’s pre-1963 itself then the perfect finishing touch is a custom cherished numberplate of this type – with nice black and silver plates, of course!

Irish reg can also be considered as dateless as they carry no year identifier, but don’t themselves date back to prior to 1963. They’re being issued all the time, which makes for a lower price point as they’re not as rare. They can, however, be just as sought after if you pick up the right combination of letters/numbers.

If this is your first venture into buying a cherished numberplate then we would like to put your mind at ease. The whole ethos behind our business is customer satisfaction and that’s why we have gone to the trouble and expense of becoming registered to BSI Quality Mark. For this reason, we are not allowed to make up our testimonials, as we have to account to British Standards for their authenticity. We are inspected annually by a BSI inspector and you can be assured that we will put the same care into carrying out your transfer as for all our other thousands of satisfied customers over the last quarter of a century.

A number plate that was registered with the DVLA before 1963 is usually classed as a Cherished Number Plate. The first ever registration number was issued in London in 1904. A “proper” cherished number plate is classed as a plate that does not immediately show the age of the vehicle. For example ABC 123 was issued somewhere between January 1936 and September 1960, but just by looking at it you cannot tell what year exactly. This is a proper cherished number plate.

ABC 123K was issued between August 1971 and August 1972. You can tell this by the K on the end, the following year ABC 123L would have been issued, then ABC 123M and so on. This pattern with a suffix letter to identify the age of the vehicle led to plates of this format being known as “suffix plates”.

So, although people do buy plates with what we call a suffix letter, if you want a real cherished number plate it should not have a letter that identifies the age.

You will currently be driving a vehicle. All number plates have an intrinsic value so we have invented and developed a computer generated Instant Free Valuation Service. So, if you are curious to know the worth of your number plate, then just try our system out. It takes only a few seconds and you get the answer straight away, no waiting, and no delay. We are the only dealer to have invented this system and we are very proud of it.

However, if you are ready to purchase a plate, why not give our number plate search a go?

Some registration numbers are what we call private plates. There are many different terms used, one of them is Cherished Plate. Some people sell these numbers privately but a lot of people go through number plate dealers to sell them as it is easier to let somebody do the paperwork who knows what they are doing.

If you need somebody to do this for you why not try Nationla Numbers we have been doing this for so long we know as much as the department of transport. If you have a cherished plate you want to sell why not try us.

If this is your first venture into buying a Cherished Plate then we would like to put your mind at ease. Cherished Number Plates UK

Cherished Number Plates UK offer the facility to transfer registration marks between vehicles, subject to specific regulations is available throughout the UK. DVLA, Swansea along with the network of local offices administer the system for England, Scotland and Wales whereas Coleraine has the task of dealing with Northern Ireland.

Unfortunately, the two systems often do not integrate tremendously well so to say there is one unified cherished number plates UK system would be untrue at present.

For example, if a Northern Ireland resident purchases a mark from a DVLA auction on a certificate, under current regulations the mark has to be assigned first to a vehicle registered on the DVLA computer before being subject to a cherished transfer onto the N.I. vehicle.

This is more like knocking over a line of dominoes rather than a “joined up” cherished number plates UK system. Hopefully, things will improve in the future!
