DVLA have revealed the highest selling number plates ahead of the World Cup

The 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil is fast approaching and football fans around the globe are gearing up for what is bound to be an exciting few weeks. Of course, the most fanatic of supporters are known for expressing their love for the sport and their team in anyway possible in this game personalised number plates become the most unlikely of trophies.

world cup

Number plates are really one of a kind, and while there might be others similar a perfect representation of a word or name is hard to come by. There may only ever be one or two number plates in the country that could be held with pride by football supporters and you’ve got to be in the right place at the right time, and have the right budget, to get your hands on one.

Ready for the World Cup the DVLA have revealed their Top 10 highest selling number plates from their past auctions. Keep in mind many of these will have gone up astronomically in value in the following years.

lb9,400 PRE 570N (PRESTON)

lb10,000 UTD 80Y (UNITED BOY)

lb11,500 S41 NTS (SAINTS)

lb12,000 EN61 AND (ENGLAND)

lb14,500 DER 8Y (DERBY)

lb19,000 ALB 10N (ALBION)

lb35,000 V1 LLA (VILLA)

lb36,000 HU11 CTY (HULL CITY)

lb36,000 AR53 NAL (ARSENAL)

lb57,000 WE57 HAM (WEST HAM)

Many of these are currently on the market with their private owners at much, much higher prices. To think for even the cheapest of these number plates you would be able to attend every group game in the World Cup plus the final itself. An that is the cheapest one! I guess the difference is local clubs often get a much more die-hard following than international teams.

Many football plates are still available for much cheaper also. A Manchester fan may be interested in UN12 TED.

The FIFA 2014 World Cup starts on Thursday the 12th of June with Brazil versus Croatia.

This morning another excellent plate sold at the DVLA auction in Daventry. The 993 RS – likely bought for its namesake the Porsche 993 Carrera RS – sold for an impressive lb30,000 making it the highest priced number plate to be sold in this auction.

090514 Porsche 993 RS

Porsche 993 Carrera RS

The Carrera RS is a lightweight variation of the Carrera. Running on a 3.8 liter engine with 300hp, achieving 0-60 in 4.7 seconds.

The exterior is recognisable by special non-retractable rear wing, small front flaps and 3-piece 18-inch (460 mm) aluminium wheels. In the rear the seats were swapped for special racing seats.

The Carrera RS was in 1995 and 1996. While legal throughout Europe it was not approved for export in the United States.

The Porsche 993 Carrera RS is certainly a beautiful car. Used they sell for around lb80,000, so you can see why this number plate would attracted a lot of interested from high bidders.

‘Oldest’ Vauxhall sells at auction for lb94k

November 5, 2012

Possibly the 'Oldest' Vauxhall in the world?

Possibly the 'Oldest' Vauxhall in the world?

The 1903 Vauxhall 5hp, believed to be the oldest surviving car of its kind, has been sold at auction.

The classic car, which sports the number plate A 719, fetched lb94,460.

Bonhams are the company behind the sale of the Vauxhall. The London-based company are regarded as one of the largest auctioneers of fine art and antiques. They have even sold a piece of motoring history to Nationla Numbers in the past, Eric Craggs’ prized EC 2.

Director of Bonhams’ UK motor car department, Tim Schofield, said: “This is the first time in 108 years this historic landmark vehicle has been offered on the open market.

“We believe it is the oldest surviving Vauxhall, which makes it a very important motor car.”

A 1904 Richard-Brasier and a 1903 Barre Tonneau Chassis were sold for lb223,260 and lb133,660 respectfully by Bonhams in the past.

On November 6th, 1903, Vauxhall managing director Percy Kidner ordered the 5hp.

Kidner himself sold the car in April 1904 to Dr Dudley Bernhardt, from Marylbone, London.

The Bernhardt family kept the car in their possession until around the 1920s, when they ‘renovated’ the car with a modern-style radiator and bonnet.

During World War II it was loaned to the London Science Museum for exhibition. Interest in the car was said to be very high at the time.

Vauxhall Motors assisted the museum in refurbishing the car in 2001 and 2002.

Alex Ferguson not United with Number Plate Namesake

March 28, 2010
Posted in Auctions,DVLA — Written by Nationla Numbers

The Sun newspaper on Friday reported the plans of Manchester United fans to club together to buy Sir Alex Ferguson a personalised number plate.

The number plate – UTD 805S, which reads UTD BOSS, was shunned by Ferguson, who told the fans that he “wasn’t interested”.

The loyal fans had raised lb10,000 to fund the present, which was up for grabs at the DVLA Spring Auction in Old Trafford.

Damian Lawson of the DVLA reportedly hoped to make lb3 million from the sale, saying that “the players are keen to buy it.”

But, despite the media attention and high-profile of the number plate, it sold for just lb2,500 on the hammer; bought by a seemingly unrelated couple at the auction.

So, Fergie gave the plate the thumbs down, but I am sure UTD 805S will be spotted somewhere, proudly displayed on a loyal fan’s vehicle, and flying the flag for the Red Devils. Hundreds of fans who support Manchester United display Manchester United number plates to show their allegiance and support of the side.

DVLA have removed two offensive personalised registrations from their upcoming auction.

The registrations, F4 GOT and D1 KES, could have fetched over lb900 each.

A spokesperson for DVLA said, “DVLA has responsibility to ensure that the combinations used on registration marks do not cause general upset or offence.”

“Having reviewed the appropriateness of the registration marks F4 GOT and D1 KES, we have withdrawn these marks from sale on the grounds of the clear potential offence they may cause.”

Stonewall, the lesbian, gay and bisexual charity, welcomed the withdrawal of the registrations: “We welcome the action by the DVLA in ensuring that these potentially offensive items were withdrawn from sale. This kind of proactive action by the public authorities helps make Britain a more equal place.”

Nationla Numbers offers funny number plates and rude number plates that are fun but won’t cause offense. Search for a personalised registration on our web site to see for yourself.

Aston Martin Vanquish

The DVLA’s next number plate auction, held in Cheshire, sees some fantastic personalised number plates become available for the first time.

There’s a registration to suit all kinds of people, places, spies, and lovers of summer races!

Good for the girls are an Allegra registration – A113 GRA and an Abbey registration – A88 BBY.

Two for the boys include an Aaron registration – A444 RON and a Bobby registration – BOB 333Y.

One of my favourite number plates up for auction is the registration AO07 SPY. This one certainly isn’t for your eyes only – what a fantastic number plate! Maybe we’ll see James Bond himself sporting this personalised number plate in his next film as the dashing spy, on a swanky car like the Aston Martin V12 Vanquish he drove in Die Another Day?

But the Gold Cup has to go to A55 COT, which looks just like Ascot!

With the Royal Ascot Races running till the 20th of June this year, how would you fancy a day at the races with this number plate? It would be a clear winner!

Now, where did I put the Pimm’s?

Thursday’s auction held at Whittlebury Hall hotel in Northamptonshire saw the sale of 1 HRH, which went for princely lb113,815.
